Bat and Moth Survey 2023

The moth traps were very effective and all manner of flying creatures were drawn to them!

The highlight of the evening was the sighting of a European Antlion - only the second to have been spotted on the Isle of Wight!

On 4th September we had an exciting evening in the churchyard with IW naturalists, Hazel Makepeace, Iain Outlaw and Jim Broadbent.

Hazel had bat detectors, and Jim and Iain set up numerous moth traps around the churchyard.

The pipistrelle bats seemed as interested in us as we were in them! They circled around us as we picked up their ultrasonic echolocation on the detectors.

Here are the survey results!
